There is no more
awe-inspiring beauty to be found anywhere than in
the North Carolina High Country in June. On its way
north through the Blue Ridge toward New England,
the Appalachian Trail passes over two 5800’+ balds,
Jane Bald, the southernmost, and then Round Bald,
before dropping into Carvers Gap. Climbing up the
northern side of the gap, the AT crosses over the
6200’+ crown of Roan High Knob.
We mention these elevations because elevations are important. Catawba rhododendron love high country, and the summits of Jane and Round Balds and Roan High Knob are testimony of that love. Beginning in the second week of June, the Catawbas burst forth in a display of floral color not to be outdone even among the hills of Texas. Joining the Catawbas in the early part of this period are their cousins, the flame azaleas, as well as a host of smaller blooming species. Images from wide-angle to macro offer something to choose for everyone.
Of course the High Country is about much more than just Catawbas. There are awesome waterfalls and mountain streams, quaint old mountain farmsteads, sunrises and sunsets filled with color, intimate forest scenes, and vistas that reveal the visions of eagles. The Blue Ridge Parkway and Grandfather Mountain are close at hand and the distractions of a hurried world are far away.
